Megohmmeters

A megohmmeter is an instrument used to measure very high electrical resistances, expressed in megohms (MΩ) or gigohms (GΩ). It is also known as an insulation tester. What is a megohmmeter used for? A megohmmeter is used to assess the quality and integrity of electrical insulation by measuring resistance in ohms on equipment such as cables, motors, transformers, or any other electrical installation. The megohmmeter applies a DC voltage and measures the leakage current flowing through the insulating material. Using Ohm’s law, it calculates the insulation resistance, which indicates the condition of the insulation: the higher the resistance, the better the insulation. Its use is essential to ensure electrical safety and to prevent short circuits, electric shocks, or unexpected equipment failures.
